John's experiences as a musician are many and varied. From listening to his parents play Bach together in the living room, to piano lessons beginning in the first grade, to his introduction to the trumpet and ensemble skills in the fifth grade, John's life has always been full of music.
He began his serious study of the trumpet in his sophomore year in high school, when he began taking trumpet lessons with Dana Russian. Within a year under Dana's tutelage, John competed and won positions in the Massachusetts Northeast Senior District Band, the Massachusetts All-State Band, and the New England Conservatory Preparatory School's Massachusetts Youth Wind Ensemble (MYWE). That summer, John was appointed principal trumpet in the New England Music Camp's top orchestra and wind band. In his senior year of high school, he received the principal position in the Northshore Youth Symphony Orchestra. He held several leadership roles within his band at North Andover High School, organizing trumpet sectionals, fundraisers, the NAHS Pep Band, and even occasionally rehearsing the NAHS wind ensemble in both standard repertoire and his own compositions.
John is now attending the University of Massachusetts-Amherst as a student of Eric Berlin. He plans to graduate with a Bachelor of Music degree with concentrations in Music Education, Trumpet Performance, and Music Theory. He is a member of the University Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, the 11-piece UMass Brass Ensemble, and JIMP Brass Quintet. He is on the Music Staff of the UMass Minuteman Marching Band (UMMB) and a past member of the UMass Hoop Band. John is helping to introduce a chapter of the music fraternity Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia on the UMass campus, and is currently President of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia - Massachusetts Alpha Colony.
